Those of us who live and work in Boyd Acres neighborhood have had a busy 2018. New developments, businesses and improvements to the roads and schools abound. As for BANA we provided service to members and others with programs and expertise.
Here are some of the highlights:
Speakers – Assistant City Manager Jon Skidmore; City Councilor Barbara Campbell; Fire Marshall Kevin Sullivan; Bethlehem Inn; Deschutes County Emergency Services Manager Nathan Garibay; Brian Douglas of Disability Advocates; City Engineer for the Empire project, Sinclair Burr.
In September BANA sponsored a Transportation Forum with State, County and City transportation agencies participating. They briefed us on their 20 year planning processes for improving transportation in our community. More than 70 persons attended.
BANA Board members provided support and expertise to:
Neighborhood Association Round Table in the formation of the Neighborhood Leadership Alliance (NLA);
Deschutes County Sheriff’s office in the formation of the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) network;
Neighborhood Association Round Table strategic planning
BANA is represented by:
Vice chair Cindy King who is the chair of the COAD
Matt Bryant on the Neighborhood Leadership Alliance
Jim Beauchemin on the Bikeways infrastructure panel and the Hwy 97 Sounding Board.
Bethlehem Inn, a nonprofit shelter located in our neighborhood, invited our members to pilot a new food collection campaign, the Blue Bags. Members take special Blue Bags, fill them with staple food items and donate to the Inn. This will help the shelter keep the pantry full during the winter. A dozen members are participating.
Business Outreach committee spearheaded by Jeff Silverman is contacting new and existing businesses to share information and understand their needs.
Organization
We chose new board members for an expanded 7-member board of directors and updated our bylaws to reflect the new Urban Growth Boundaries.
BANA will be represented on the Juniper Ridge Management Advisory Board recently reactivated by the City Council. We will be requesting members with expertise in land development to consider serving a 2-year term. The Mayor will consider our nominations.
Land Use Chair Jim Beauchemin reviewed and commented on dozens of development proposals in the neighborhood from climbing gyms to housing developments, vocational schools and marijuana processing facilities.
We continued our second year in the Civic Equity Project implementing a strategic plan which includes growing our online presence with Nextdoor and a Facebook Group site.
Thanks to all our supporters especially Elks Lodge 1371 and their manager, Don Gotcher, for hosting our monthly meetings. Thanks to Bendbroadband and Port of Subs for support of the annual meeting and to Bend 2030 for the Civic Equity training and coaching.
All the best to everyone in our little corner of the world. The January 14th meeting kicks off the year with a presentation on the City’s Climate Action plan. Cassie Lacy, staff to the Climate Act Committee, will share how Bend will reduce carbon emissions.
6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on Boyd Acres Road
